The Audi A5 was once described by its creator, Walter da Silva, as the most beautiful car he had ever designed – no mean accolade for someone who penned many Alfa Romeos, the Volkswagen Scirocco and even the Audi R8! Introduced in 2007, the Audi A5 is now available in Coupe, Cabriolet and Sportback. The ultimate incarnation of the A5 range is the 450PS Audi RS 5 – a true expression of Vorsprung durch Technik.

The Audi A5 was first launched as a Coupe in 2007 with a Cabriolet being added in 2009 and the final body style, the Sportback being added in 2010. Available with a range of efficient petrol and diesel engines, quattro permanent four wheel drive and a choice of manual or automatic gearboxes, including the revolutionary dual clutch S tronic gearbox, the A5 is as beautiful as it is well appointed.

The A5 Coupe is available in Standard, SE, Sport and S line trim levels – each offering varying levels of equipment and distinctive styling. The sporty S5 features a powerful 4.2 litre V8 FSI engine and quattro permanent four wheel drive. The ultimate incarnation of the A5 Coupe, the RS 5 was introduced in late 2010 and features a 450PS V8 engine, enabling it to reach 62mph from a standstill in just 4.6 seconds.

Available in Standard, SE and S line trim levels, all Audi A5 Cabriolets come with a fully automatic hood which can operated at speeds of up to 31mph. Powered by a 3 litre supercharged V6 engine and driven by an S tronic gearbox and quattro permanent four wheel drive the Audi S5 Cabriolet offers blistering top-down performance.

With Standard, SE and S line trim levels the A5 Sportback offers coupe styling with 5-door practicality. The sporty S5 Sportback features quattro permanent four wheel drive, an S tronic gearbox and a powerful 3 litre supercharged V6 engine.

The new Audi A6 is up to 80 kilograms lighter than the predecessor model. Audi has thus broken the unwritten law that says that cars become heavier with each new model line.

It appeared to be a basic principle in the automotive industry: every new model was heavier than its predecessor. This was because each additional comfort or safety improvement resulted in an increase in vehicle weight. More weight makes it necessary to increase engine output in order to ensure the same driving characteristics. This in turn creates the need for a stronger gearbox and brakes as well as a larger fuel tank – thus increasing the car’s weight even more.

Audi’s response to this development was to take the first radical step in the other direction. Thanks to an Audi ultra-lightweight body that is significantly lighter in weight than the conventional structure, it was possible to completely reverse the weight gain. Just as each additional gram of weight is multiplied due to the measures that then have to be taken, each gram less has the opposite effect: smaller engines and tanks, brakes and gearboxes.

The result is lighter vehicles with the identical driving characteristics and a crucial advantage – lower fuel consumption.
