Gwyneth Paltrow personalises new Audi supercar to raise money for Elton John AIDS Foundation.

  • Audi RS 6 Avant sells for £120,000 at charity auction
  • Proceeds go entirely to support Elton John AIDS Foundation

A unique RS 6 Avant with a personalised interior autographed by the Oscar-winning actress Gwyneth Paltrow has sold at auction for £120,000 at the annual Elton John White Tie & Tiara Ball, held at the home of the singer / songwriter and his partner David Furnish. Every penny from the auction of the Audi supercar will go to support the work of the Elton John AIDS Foundation.

An impressive net total of £3m was raised by the Ball. Guests were invited to bid for the various lots, which included the one-off RS 6 Avant complete with a Lunar Silver leather interior immortalised by Paltrow's signature. The formidable super Avant is currently the most potent Audi available, producing 560PS and 700 Nm, a 0-62mph sprint time of just 3.9 seconds, and a top speed limited to 155mph, which can be raised upon request to 189mph.

Paltrow - who drives an Audi both in character as Pepper Potts in the Iron Man action series, and in real life on the roads of London and Los Angeles - put her stamp on the car earlier in the month by signing it at the model's launch at Audi City in Piccadilly, London. It had been the very first RS 6 Avant to arrive in the UK, ahead of general deliveries in August.

Stars at the White Tie & Tiara Ball included Coldplay, Uma Thurman, Freida Pinto, Elizabeth Hurley and David Walliams. "Audi is delighted to donate the unique RS 6 Avant for the equally unique White Tie & Tiara Ball. We are thrilled at the benefit it will give to Sir Elton's AIDS Foundation, which does such outstanding charity work, and very proud to be continued sponsors of the Ball," says Jon Zammett, Head for PR for Audi UK.

Sir Elton John adds: "I would like to extend my thanks to Audi for supporting the Elton John White Tie & Tiara Ball for the last 11 years, and for its generosity to the evening's fundraising."

The Elton John AIDS Foundation supports thousands of men, women and children with life-saving medicines, as well as offering information, nutrition, education, shelter and support. The Ball will help raise crucial funds to assist the Foundation in its ongoing battle against AIDS. The 2013 White Tie and Tiara Ball was the 15th ball in the event's history.

The new Audi A6 is up to 80 kilograms lighter than the predecessor model. Audi has thus broken the unwritten law that says that cars become heavier with each new model line.

It appeared to be a basic principle in the automotive industry: every new model was heavier than its predecessor. This was because each additional comfort or safety improvement resulted in an increase in vehicle weight. More weight makes it necessary to increase engine output in order to ensure the same driving characteristics. This in turn creates the need for a stronger gearbox and brakes as well as a larger fuel tank – thus increasing the car’s weight even more.

Audi’s response to this development was to take the first radical step in the other direction. Thanks to an Audi ultra-lightweight body that is significantly lighter in weight than the conventional structure, it was possible to completely reverse the weight gain. Just as each additional gram of weight is multiplied due to the measures that then have to be taken, each gram less has the opposite effect: smaller engines and tanks, brakes and gearboxes.

The result is lighter vehicles with the identical driving characteristics and a crucial advantage – lower fuel consumption.
